Traversal: O(n)

Following the Chain

In the world of linked lists, there are no shortcuts. Unlike arrays where you can jump directly to any element using its index, a linked list demands that you follow the chain—visiting each node, one by one, until you reach your destination.

This fundamental characteristic defines everything about how we work with linked lists. Whether you're searching for a value, counting elements, or simply printing the contents, you must traverse. Understanding traversal isn't just about knowing how to visit every node—it's about understanding why this operation is inherently O(n) and what that means for algorithm design.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this page, you will understand the mechanics of linked list traversal at a deep level, why it is fundamentally O(n), how this compares to array traversal, common traversal patterns, edge cases that trip up even experienced developers, and how to reason about traversal costs in real-world scenarios.

The Fundamental Traversal Mechanism

Let's begin with the absolute basics. A linked list is a sequence of nodes, where each node contains two things:

Data — The value stored in this position
Next pointer — A reference to the next node in the sequence (or null/None if this is the last node)

To traverse a linked list means to visit every node from a starting point (usually the head) to the end (the node whose next pointer is null).

The traversal algorithm is deceptively simple:

traversal.pseudo

// Basic linked list traversal (pseudocode)
PROCEDURE Traverse(head):
    current ← head
    WHILE current ≠ null:
        // Process the current node (print, count, search, etc.)
        Process(current.data)
        // Move to the next node
        current ← current.next
    END WHILE
END PROCEDURE

Breaking down each step:

Initialization (current ← head): We create a pointer that starts at the first node. We call it current because it always points to the node we're currently examining.
Loop condition (current ≠ null): We continue as long as we haven't fallen off the end of the list. When current becomes null, we've processed all nodes.
Processing (Process(current.data)): This is where the actual work happens—printing, comparing, accumulating, transforming—whatever operation we're performing.
Advancement (current ← current.next): We follow the pointer to the next node. This is the critical step that moves us forward through the chain.

The Golden Rule of Traversal

Never lose your reference to the current node before saving the next. The statement current = current.next is safe because we read current.next before overwriting current. But if you wrote current.next = something; current = current.next, you'd lose the chain forever.

Why Traversal Is O(n)

The time complexity of traversal is O(n) where n is the number of nodes in the list. This isn't just a convention—it's a fundamental property of how linked lists are structured. Let's understand exactly why.

The core issue: No random access

In an array, all elements live in contiguous memory. If the array starts at memory address 1000 and each element takes 4 bytes, then:

Element 0 is at address 1000
Element 1 is at address 1004
Element 37 is at address 1000 + (37 × 4) = 1148

Given the base address and element size, computing any element's location is a simple arithmetic operation—O(1).

In a linked list, nodes can be anywhere in memory. There's no formula to calculate where node 37 lives. The only way to find node 37 is to start at the head and follow 37 pointers:

head → node1 → node2 → ... → node37

Memory Layout Comparison: Array vs Linked List
Aspect	Array	Linked List
Memory layout	Contiguous (elements adjacent)	Non-contiguous (nodes scattered)
Address of element i	base + (i × element_size)	Unknown until we traverse
Access element 0	O(1) — compute address directly	O(1) — follow head pointer
Access element n-1	O(1) — compute address directly	O(n) — traverse entire list
Access element k	O(1) — compute address directly	O(k) — traverse k nodes

Counting the operations:

When we traverse a linked list of n nodes:

We perform exactly n pointer dereferences (reading current.next)
We perform exactly n node visits (processing current.data)
We perform exactly n assignments (updating current)
We perform exactly n+1 comparisons (checking current ≠ null)

Every operation count is proportional to n. We can't skip nodes, we can't jump ahead, we can't parallelize the traversal (without significant complexity). The chain dictates our path.

The mathematical proof:

Let T(n) be the time to traverse a list of n nodes.

If n = 0: T(0) = c₀ (just check that head is null)
If n > 0: T(n) = c₁ + T(n-1) where c₁ is the time to process one node

Solving the recurrence: T(n) = n·c₁ + c₀ = O(n)

Best, Average, and Worst Case

For traversal, best case = average case = worst case = O(n). We always visit every node. There's no early termination in a pure traversal. (Search might terminate early, but that's a different operation—we'll distinguish carefully.)

Traversal Patterns in Practice

While the basic traversal mechanism is always the same, the purpose of traversal varies widely. Here are the most common traversal patterns you'll encounter:

Pattern 1: Counting Elements

The simplest use case—count how many nodes exist:

    let current = head;

    while (current !== null) {
        count++;
        current = current.next;
    }

    return count;
}

// Time: O(n) - visit every node once
// Space: O(1) - only a counter and a pointer

Pattern 2: Searching for a Value

Look for a specific value, potentially stopping early if found:

    let current = head;

    while (current !== null) {
        if (current.data === target) {
            return true; // Found it - early termination
        }
        current = current.next;
    }

    return false; // Traversed entire list, not found
}

// Time: O(n) worst case, O(1) best case (if first element matches)
// Average case: O(n/2) = O(n) when element is present and uniformly distributed
// Space: O(1)

Pattern 3: Collecting Values

Gather all values into another data structure (like an array):

        current = current.next;
    }

    return result;
}

// Time: O(n)
// Space: O(n) - the output array contains all n elements

Pattern 4: Aggregating Values

        current = current.next;
    }

    return total;
}

function max(head: ListNode<number> | null): number | null {
    if (head === null) return null;

    let maxValue = head.data;
    let current = head.next;

    while (current !== null) {
        if (current.data > maxValue) {
            maxValue = current.data;
        }
        current = current.next;
    }

    return maxValue;
}

// Time: O(n) for both
// Space: O(1) for both

Pattern 5: Transforming Values (Map)

    // Create new head for result list
    const newHead = new ListNode(transform(head.data));
    let newCurrent = newHead;
    let oldCurrent = head.next;

    while (oldCurrent !== null) {
        newCurrent.next = new ListNode(transform(oldCurrent.data));
        newCurrent = newCurrent.next;
        oldCurrent = oldCurrent.next;
    }

    return newHead;
}

// Example: Double all values
// map(list, x => x * 2)

// Time: O(n)
// Space: O(n) - creating a new list

Pattern Recognition Matters

All these patterns share the same traversal skeleton. Once you internalize the basic pattern, you can adapt it to any use case by changing only the processing logic inside the loop. This is why mastering traversal is so foundational.

Traversal vs Array Iteration: A Critical Comparison

Both linked list traversal and array iteration are O(n) for visiting all elements. But O(n) doesn't mean they're equally fast. Big-O notation describes how operations scale, not their absolute speed. Let's examine the practical differences:

Array Iteration

•Elements stored contiguously in memory
•CPU cache can prefetch upcoming elements
•Iteration via index increment (simple arithmetic)
•Each access is a single memory read
•Very cache-friendly, minimal cache misses

Linked List Traversal

•Nodes scattered throughout memory
•CPU cache cannot predict next node location
•Traversal via pointer dereferencing
•Each access requires following a pointer
•Often cache-unfriendly, frequent cache misses

The cache locality problem:

Modern CPUs don't just read the exact byte you request—they read entire cache lines (typically 64 bytes). When you access arr[i], the CPU likely also pulls arr[i+1], arr[i+2], etc. into the cache. Your next access is already in fast memory.

With linked lists, current.next could be anywhere. When you follow a pointer to a new node, there's a high probability that node isn't in the cache. The CPU must fetch it from slower main memory—a cache miss that can cost 100+ CPU cycles.

Empirical impact:

In practice, iterating through a linked list can be 10-100x slower than iterating through an array of the same size, even though both are O(n). This is called the constant factor difference that Big-O notation hides.

Traversal Speed: Array vs Linked List (Illustrative)
n (elements)	Array Iteration	Linked List Traversal	Slowdown Factor
1,000	~1 μs	~10-50 μs	10-50x
100,000	~100 μs	~1-5 ms	10-50x
10,000,000	~10 ms	~100-500 ms	10-50x

This Doesn't Mean Linked Lists Are Bad

Linked lists exist because traversal isn't the only operation that matters. Insertion and deletion at known positions are O(1) for linked lists but O(n) for arrays. Choose data structures based on the mix of operations your application needs, not just traversal speed.

Edge Cases and Common Pitfalls

Traversal seems simple, but edge cases catch even experienced developers. Let's examine the traps and how to avoid them:

Edge Case 1: Empty List

The simplest case that's often forgotten:

function printList<T>(head: ListNode<T> | null): void {
    let current = head;

    while (current !== null) {
        console.log(current.data);
        current = current.next;
    }
}

// This works for empty lists - it just prints nothing
// But some operations need special handling:

function getFirst<T>(head: ListNode<T> | null): T {
    if (head === null) {
        throw new Error("Cannot get first element of empty list");
    }
    return head.data;
}

Edge Case 2: Single-Element List

A list with exactly one node has subtle implications:

        // Note: current.next !== null check prevents null access
        if (current.data === current.next.data) {
            return true;
        }
        current = current.next;
    }

    return false;
}

// Single element: immediately fails current.next !== null
// Returns false - correct! One element can't have duplicates

Edge Case 3: Accessing the Last Element

    }

    // current now points to the last node

}

// WRONG VERSION - would throw null pointer exception

    return current.data; // ERROR: Cannot read 'data' of null

Common Pitfall: Infinite Loops with Corrupted Lists

If a linked list contains a cycle (due to a bug or corruption), naive traversal runs forever:

    let fast = head;

    while (fast !== null && fast.next !== null) {
        slow = slow!.next;
        fast = fast.next.next;

        if (slow === fast) {
            // Cycle detected - would loop forever with naive traversal
            return false; // Indicate traversal failed
        }

        process(slow!.data);
    }

    return true; // Successfully traversed without finding a cycle
}

Production Code Must Handle Edge Cases

In production systems, an unexpected null pointer or infinite loop can crash servers, corrupt data, or freeze user interfaces. Always handle empty lists, single-element lists, and consider defensive cycle detection for untrusted input.

Recursive vs Iterative Traversal

Traversal can be implemented both iteratively (with a loop) and recursively. While both are O(n) in time, they have important differences in space complexity and practical applicability.

Iterative traversal (what we've seen so far):

        current = current.next;
    }
}

// Time: O(n)
// Space: O(1) - only one pointer variable

Recursive traversal:

function printRecursive<T>(node: ListNode<T> | null): void {
    // Base case: reached the end
    if (node === null) {
        return;
    }

    // Process current node
    console.log(node.data);

    // Recurse on the rest of the list
    printRecursive(node.next);
}

// Time: O(n)
// Space: O(n) - each recursive call adds a stack frame!

The hidden cost of recursion:

Recursive traversal uses O(n) stack space because each node requires a function call that doesn't complete until all subsequent nodes are processed. For a list of 10,000 nodes, you'd have 10,000 stack frames simultaneously active.

This leads to a critical problem: stack overflow. Most programming languages limit stack size (often 1-8 MB). A long linked list can crash your program with a stack overflow exception.

Iterative vs Recursive Traversal
Aspect	Iterative	Recursive
Time Complexity	O(n)	O(n)
Space Complexity	O(1)	O(n)
Maximum safe list size	Limited by memory	Limited by stack size (~10K-100K nodes)
Code readability	Straightforward loop	Elegant but subtle
Tail-call optimization	N/A	Possible in some languages (not JS/Python)
Production recommendation	Usually preferred	Use with caution for small n

When recursion makes sense:

Recursion shines for operations that naturally build results "from the end"—like reversing a list:

function reverseRecursively<T>(node: ListNode<T> | null): ListNode<T> | null {
    if (node === null || node.next === null) {
        return node; // Base: empty or single node is already reversed
    }

    const reversedRest = reverseRecursively(node.next);
    node.next.next = node; // Append current to end of reversed rest
    node.next = null; // Current is now the end

    return reversedRest;
}

This recursive reversal is conceptually elegant—but in production, prefer iterative versions to avoid stack overflow on large lists.

Best Practice

Use iterative traversal as your default for linked lists. Reserve recursion for problems where the recursive structure provides genuine clarity (like tree operations) or when you can guarantee the input size is bounded.

Traversal with Two Pointers (Preview)

While we cover two-pointer techniques in depth in a later module, it's worth noting here that many advanced linked list algorithms use multiple traversal pointers simultaneously. This is possible precisely because traversal is the fundamental operation.

The slow-fast pointer pattern:

Using two pointers moving at different speeds allows us to solve problems that single-traversal can't handle efficiently:

// Find the middle element in a single pass
function findMiddle<T>(head: ListNode<T> | null): T | null {
    if (head === null) return null;

    let slow = head;
    let fast = head;

    // Fast moves 2 steps for every 1 step of slow
    while (fast.next !== null && fast.next.next !== null) {
        slow = slow.next!;
        fast = fast.next.next;
    }

    // When fast reaches the end, slow is at the middle
    return slow.data;
}

// Time: O(n) - but we only traverse once!
// Space: O(1) - just two pointers

Problems solvable with two-pointer traversal:

Finding the middle: Slow pointer ends up at midpoint when fast reaches end
Cycle detection: If slow and fast ever meet, there's a cycle
Finding the kth element from end: Start one pointer k steps ahead, then advance both until leader reaches end
Detecting palindromes: Reach middle, reverse second half, compare with first half

All these rely on the same traversal mechanics, just with additional bookkeeping.

Coming Soon

We'll explore two-pointer techniques comprehensively in Module 9. For now, understand that traversal is the foundation—everything builds on knowing how to walk through a linked list node by node.

Summary: Mastering Linked List Traversal

We've covered linked list traversal in depth—from the basic mechanism to performance characteristics, edge cases, and implementation patterns. Let's consolidate the key insights:

Key Takeaways

•Traversal is inherently O(n) — We must follow the chain from head to target. No shortcuts exist due to non-contiguous memory layout.
•The basic pattern is universal — Initialize current to head, loop while not null, process and advance. All traversal-based operations share this skeleton.
•O(n) doesn't mean equally fast — Linked list traversal is typically 10-50x slower than array iteration due to poor cache locality, even with the same Big-O.
•Edge cases matter — Empty lists, single elements, accessing the last node, and cycle detection require careful handling.
•Prefer iterative over recursive — Iterative traversal uses O(1) space; recursive uses O(n) stack space and risks overflow on large lists.
•Traversal is the foundation — Search, aggregation, transformation, and two-pointer techniques all build on basic traversal. Master it thoroughly.

What's next:

Now that we understand traversal—the read operation—we'll examine access by index in detail. Unlike arrays where index access is O(1), linked lists require O(n) traversal to reach position k. This critical difference drives many data structure selection decisions.

Page Complete

You now have a deep understanding of linked list traversal—the fundamental operation that underlies every linked list algorithm. In the next page, we'll explore how the O(n) access cost creates a critical distinction between linked lists and arrays.
