Initially, `empty = N`, `full = 0`, buffer empty. ✓ 2. For overflow: requires inserting when buffer has N items. But then `empty = 0`, so producer blocks on `P(empty)`. ✓ 3. For underflow: requires removing when buffer has 0 items. But then `full = 0`, so consumer blocks on `P(full)`. ✓ 4. The semaphore operations maintain `empty + full = N` (each operation decrements one and increments the other). ✓ **No Deadlock**: Processes only block on semaphores with invariant-guaranteed eventual signal. A blocked producer (waiting on `empty`) will be signaled by the next consumer. A blocked consumer (waiting on `full`) will be signaled by the next producer. The only way both block simultaneously is if both semaphores are 0, which implies the buffer has N items (blocking producers) AND 0 items (blocking consumers)—a contradiction.7c:T566,// Java implementation using synchronized and wait/notify public class BoundedBuffer { private final Object[] buffer; private final int capacity; private int count = 0; private int in = 0; private int out = 0; public BoundedBuffer(int capacity) { this.capacity = capacity; this.buffer = new Object[capacity]; } // Producer calls this - synchronized ensures mutual exclusion public synchronized void put(T item) throws InterruptedException { // Wait while buffer is full while (count == capacity) { wait(); // Release lock and block atomically } buffer[in] = item; in = (in + 1) % capacity; count++; // Wake up waiting consumers notifyAll(); } // Consumer calls this @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") public synchronized T take() throws InterruptedException { // Wait while buffer is empty while (count == 0) { wait(); // Release lock and block atomically } T item = (T) buffer[out]; buffer[out] = null; // Help GC out = (out + 1) % capacity; count--; // Wake up waiting producers notifyAll(); return item; } public synchronized int size() { return count; } }7d:T5a1,#include #include #include #include template class MPMCQueue { private: std::queue queue_; mutable std::mutex mutex_; std::condition_variable not_empty_; std::condition_variable not_full_; const size_t max_size_; bool closed_ = false; public: explicit MPMCQueue(size_t max_size) : max_size_(max_size) {} // Returns false if queue is closed bool push(T item) { std::unique_lock lock(mutex_); not_full_.wait(lock, [this] { return queue_.size() < max_size_ || closed_; }); if (closed_) return false; queue_.push(std::move(item)); lock.unlock(); not_empty_.notify_one(); return true; } // Returns nullopt if queue is empty and closed std::optional pop() { std::unique_lock lock(mutex_); not_empty_.wait(lock, [this] { return !queue_.empty() || closed_; }); if (queue_.empty()) return std::nullopt; T item = std::move(queue_.front()); queue_.pop(); lock.unlock(); not_full_.notify_one(); return item; } void close() { std::lock_guard lock(mutex_); closed_ = true; not_empty_.notify_all(); not_full_.notify_all(); } };7e:T56b,#include #include template class SPSCQueue { static_assert((N & (N - 1)) == 0, "N must be power of 2"); private: std::array buffer_; alignas(64) std::atomic write_idx_{0}; // Cacheline padding alignas(64) std::atomic read_idx_{0}; // Prevents false sharing public: bool try_push(const T& item) { const size_t curr_write = write_idx_.load(std::memory_order_relaxed); const size_t next_write = (curr_write + 1) & (N - 1); // Check if buffer is full if (next_write == read_idx_.load(std::memory_order_acquire)) { return false; } buffer_[curr_write] = item; write_idx_.store(next_write, std::memory_order_release); return true; } bool try_pop(T& item) { const size_t curr_read = read_idx_.load(std::memory_order_relaxed); // Check if buffer is empty if (curr_read == write_idx_.load(std::memory_order_acquire)) { return false; } item = buffer_[curr_read]; read_idx_.store((curr_read + 1) & (N - 1), std::memory_order_release); return true; } bool empty() const { return read_idx_.load(std::memory_order_acquire) == write_idx_.load(std::memory_order_acquire); } };7f:T52c,Even with correct designs, implementation bugs lurk in producer-consumer code. Here are the most common pitfalls and how to diagnose them: ### Pitfall 1: Wrong Semaphore Order (Deadlock) **Symptom**: System freezes entirely; all threads blocked. **Cause**: Acquiring mutex before resource semaphore. **Diagnosis**: Thread dumps show producer holding mutex, waiting on empty; consumer waiting on mutex. **Prevention**: Always document semaphore acquisition order. Use RAII wrappers that enforce ordering. ### Pitfall 2: Using `if` Instead of `while` (Race Condition) **Symptom**: Sporadic buffer overflow or underflow, especially under load. **Cause**: Thread wakes from wait, but condition is no longer true due to another thread. **Diagnosis**: Insert assertions (`assert(count < BUFFER_SIZE)` before insert). Enable ThreadSanitizer. **Prevention**: Always use `while` with condition variables. Make it a team standard. ### Pitfall 3: Missing Notification (Livelock) **Symptom**: Thread waits forever even though condition should be satisfied. **Cause**: Forgetting to call `signal()` or `notifyAll()` after modifying shared state. **Diagnosis**: Log every wait/signal. Add timeout and log when timeout expires. **Prevention**: Use structured abstractions (BlockingQueue) that handle notification internally.72:{"json":{"id":"seed_05e8ea9a12d4d83d490102884cc01985","slug":"classic-os-problems","category":"Operating Systems","topic":"Classic OS Problems","title":"Classic Operating System Problems","description":"Master the foundational synchronization problems that have shaped concurrent programming theory and practice.
